He pulled an Autofiction. And opened his heart. Saffores splendorous, to the point that I didn´t recognize him. I loved how he exposed […]

Llamadas 2018 – Uruguayan Carnival Photo Blog

This year, I was planning to host a special dinner on one of the two days of Llamadas parade during the Uruguayan carnival. Unfortunately, a rain forecast caused the dates to be switched, and my dinner plans went bust, because I had to leave town on the newly scheduled date. But on the first night of Llamadas I […]

Tropic Thunder – A Fabulous Ethnic Popup Restaurant Experience in Montevideo

I have heard many visitors to Montevideo complain about the scarcity of ethnic food in our lovely city. Once in a while, however, we are pleasantly surprised by exotic food of the highest level. More often than not, Tropic Thunder´s popup restaurant experience is involved. I first met chef Pablo Cordoba as an exquisite cinematographer. […]

Casapueblo – A perfect blend of Art, Nature, and Architecture

Few artists have had the chance to create their own living museums, their perfect havens. Carlos Páez Vilaró is one of them. A disciple of the likes of Picasso and Torres García, Páez Vilaró created Casapueblo, a dreamlike affair that combines a hotel, an artist´s workshop, and an art gallery. I once had a romantic […]

Great wedding venues around the world

Exotic weddings are very fashionable these days. Sometimes, during my travels, I randomly stumble upon open-air weddings that look like straight out of a fairy tale: everyone dressed in white, the ocean and blue skies in the background, perfect weather; an ideal setting for sheer joy and happy endings. Of course, remote venues can greatly […]

Love story at the Llamadas: Candombe drumming and amour in Montevideo

We followed the drummers dancing like crazy. The llamadas consist of each group playing and dancing candombe and walking for some 10 blocks over a street called Isla de Flores. They start around the corner from my apartment, actually, but our seats were near the end of the line, so, when we followed the drummers as they exited the gates, police closed them behind us and said we couldn´t go back inside. Ana couldn´t care less: she was going to be reunited with him, and nothing else mattered.
